General information:

Through the use of Personal Assistant, people with disabilities are enabled to lead (as much as possible) an individual, independent and active life in their own home and within the community. 

Information about this job:

Service User is registered blind and it will be the job of the Personal Assistant to assist her with her activities of daily living and have an understanding of the West Indian culture.

Duties include:

Tasks may include assisting with some or all of the following activities of daily living:

  • Bathing
  • Support with brushing teeth
  • Attention to hair, skin, nails, feet, eyes, teeth etc
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Ensure clothes are in clean condition
  • Food preparation breakfast, lunch dinner and tea time.
  • Support with appropriate community activities (park, bus rides, assisting and support with shopping, be vigilant at all times and to ensure all sharp objects, matches, lighters are out of reach
  • Any other tasks appropriate to the job, as directed by family

Essential Qualities:

  • Previous experience of working with adults with a disability and dementia
  • Ability to communicate and understand
  • Be patient
  • Ability to pick up trigger signs which must be discussed with family
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Excellent personal grooming and smart appearance
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Have a sense of humour
  • Kind and caring
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Able to deal calmly and appropriately in difficult situations
  • Enjoy a challenge
  • Conscientious and always punctual


  • Arrive at the agreed time
  • Support Service User to remain as independent as possible
  • Ensure that Service User is well looked after while in your care
  • Communicate and discuss any problems that arise as soon as possible with family
  • Respect our privacy and maintain a professional approach at all times, being careful to treat our working relationship as confidential
  • Respect our possessions and equipment and only use the telephone, television, radio etc with prior consent
  • Planning the day and which household activity to do first
  • Planning an activity to do once the daily tasks have been done
  • Deciding on the meal to cook from recipe books
  • Prepare the meal safely
  • Washing clothes, bedding and deciding on the clothes line or airer
  • Cleaning bathroom, bedroom and other areas of the house as required
  • Budgeting, making sure I have enough money for food and activities for the week
  • Accessing the shops for personal items and cash withdrawals
  • Occasional trips to the doctor and hairdresser
