Job Title           Personal Assistant

Location           Bentilee, Stoke-on-Trent, ST2

Day/Times       Weekends days and time to be determined the week before

Hours                4 Hours per week

Rate of pay       £8.91per hour

 

Job summary

The young person has a diagnosis of Hypoplastic Optic Discs and Nystagmus which is a visual impairment. He wears glasses but his vision is very poor even when corrected, he therefore requires a personal assistant to provide him with supervision, a safe environment and support both physically and emotionally.

Purpose of the Job

To support and engage with the young person as well as to keep him safe. The Personal Assistant is required to support him to access suitable social activities and opportunities both inside and outside the home. This will also allow the young person’s mother and siblings to have a short break from their caring role as well as providing opportunities for the young person to do things independently from them.

Personal Care Assistant Specification

The personal assistant must be reliable and able to work flexible hours and to have respect for the young person’s privacy and confidentiality. It is essential the PA has a positive attitude to maintain the positive wellbeing of the young person.

The PA needs to be positive, respectful & have a good sense of humour whilst remaining vigilant & professional at all times.

The PA needs to be friendly & committed, with good interactive skills. The aim is to establish an enjoyable, trusting, & long-term working relationship.

The person must have patience and able to provide comforting support such as hugging, holding hands and linking.

The person must be firm but fair.

The person must be able pre-empt potential risks/dangers.

To person must be fit and healthy to ensure safety of young person for example: able to run.

The person may have experience in working with young people with visual impairments, but it is essential that you are a caring person with an abundance of common sense.

The PA needs to be aware of the risks & dangers to the young person & respond appropriately to any emergency for example the young person loves water and is drawn to this however has no perception of depth.

They must also understand the need for confidentiality in all areas of work.

 The personal assistants do need to be in good health and have the physical skilfulness of moving, handling, pushing, and bending.

Supervision

The personal assistant will be directed and accountable to the young person’s mother in all aspects of their work. They should always ask what the young person’s needs are and listen to directions and requests from both parties.

 

Main Duties

  • To ensure my safety, constant supervision at all times needed and potential dangers pre-empted as the young person does not have any awareness of danger.
  • Support & supervision with any chosen social activities inside & outside the home as long as it is safe to do so.
  • To provide appropriate comfort to the young person such as holding hands, linking, hugging when required.
  • Assistance & support with social interaction & recreation.
  • Assistance with life skills.

* The young person has interests in having various conversations asking lots of questions and having things explained, trampolining, wall climbing, walks, playing within parks so having the same likes is desirable.

There will be times when I will require my PA to enable me to carry out any chosen activity or meet any other requests, whether inside or outside my home, which I may reasonably make.

The post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure which will be funded through your employer and you will be required to complete a Children’s Safeguarding Awareness course.
