Location: Trent vale, Stoke-on-Trent

Rate of pay: £9.15 per hour


Day/Times: AM - Term time Mon - Fri 6.45am – 8.30am

                    PM – Term time Mon - Fri 3pm – 6.30pm

                    Non-term time/school holidays will be as and when required 29 hours per week.

                    Non-term time/school holidays days and times will be mutually agreed in advance.

Hours:  Term Time 26.25 hours per week contracted and 2.75 hours as and when required.

             Non-term time/school holidays will be as and when required up to 29 per week per week.

Purpose of the Job

To provide support and care for a young lady in the Stoke-on-Trent that has Lissencephaly which is also known as “smooth brain syndrome”. Symptoms may include difficulty swallowing, failure to thrive, muscle spasms, seizures, and severe global developmental delay. She can have severe seizures for which she requires oxygen. She is a wheelchair user and cannot communicate her needs and wishes verbally. The young lady currently requires diligent 24-hour care to ensure that she keeps her oxygen mask on when she is sleeping whether that be at night or in the day.

The personal assistant will need to support her in all aspects of life from personal care and associated domestic tasks, to accessing social activities. The personal assistant would be required to support for evening routines and cover mornings as and when needed.

Personal Assistant Specification

The PA must be honest, trustworthy, and reliable, must respect privacy and always maintain the young lady’s dignity.

The PA must be enthusiastic and flexible with a caring disposition. You must be able to work well independently and have a flexible working approach to school term times and non-term time.

Experience of working with children with complex needs in a personal care environment, whether that be in professional or personal environment is preferred but not essential as training and demonstrations will be provided.


My personal assistant is accountable to my mum Sarah in all aspects of their work. They should always ask what my needs are and listen to my directions and requests.

Main Duties

To aid and assist with personal care routines and any domestic related tasks.

To be vigilant around infection control measures.

To aid in meeting dietary and fluid intakes in relation to the specialist diet.

To monitor sleep and the oxygen mask remains in place at these times.

To provide support and assistance with social support and accessing social activities when required.

To promote and encourage the young person’s independence as much as possible and encourage her to learn new skills

You must be able to demonstrate an ability to re-direct challenging and disruptive behaviour to a more positive outcome.

To provide constant support and supervision on a 1:1 basis to always to keep the risk of harm and danger to a minimum.

Support of 1 person to leave the home in event of an emergency.

To appropriately provide a safe, supported, and happy environment always.

The post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and children’s safeguarding awareness course which will be funded through your employer.
