Personal Assistant/Key Worker Required

Location: Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent

Day/Times: As and when required at weekends with times to be confirmed by the employer.

Hours: 3 hours per week

Rate of pay: £8.91 per hour

Purpose of the Job

To support a 15 year old female who is diagnosed with cerebellum dysgenesis which affects her mobility and global developmental delay with speech difficulties. She uses Makaton to aid her speech. She has Nystagmus affecting her eyesight. She can be very unsteady on her feet and often has jerky movements that she cannot control. She has a wheelchair when out in the community. The support will be for accessing social activities and the community. The young person can display disruptive and challenging behaviours and requires constant support, supervision, and observation.

The young person has a sunny disposition and is always smiling. She likes bowling, the cinema or play areas. She doesn’t like animals.

Experience of supporting children with challenging behaviours, and complex needs is preferred for this role. The Key Worker/PA will always need to be vigilant to provide her with a safe and supported environment and she must always be supervised closely as she is a flight risk, has no sense of danger, and is extremely vulnerable. There always needs to be consistency and structure in their support for this person.

PA Specification

The family would like to employ a PA/Key Worker with similar interests or are confidently able to facilitate these activities.

Experience of supporting people of all ages, especially children and young adults, who display challenging, physical, and disruptive behaviours is preferred.

Experience and understanding of complex needs and how this will impact on family dynamics.

Experience or an understanding of working with non-verbal communication techniques such as MAKATON or Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

You must be able to demonstrate an ability to re-direct challenging and disruptive behaviour to a more positive outcome.

The PA’s must have a good sense of humour, be patient and of an outgoing disposition.

A car driver with a clean driving licence is preferred.

You must be honest, trustworthy, and reliable, and must always respect the family’s privacy, and be able to work without supervision.

You must be enthusiastic, flexible, and with a caring disposition.

You must be consistent and structured in your approach. 

Supervision

You will be employed by a family member and will be accountable to them in all aspects of your work.  You will need to follow directions and requests and have a confident approach to your role.

Main Duties

To support with accessing appropriate leisure and social activities, inside or outside the home. These activities may include bowling, attending play areas, or going to the cinema. She does not like animals and is frightened of them so no animal related activities are to be suggested.

The PA must be willing to support with being transported to and from local community and leisure facilities.

Support her with understanding the risks and dangers out in the community and to keep her safe always.

Always supervise her closely at an activity to reduce his vulnerability to danger and risk of flight.

Support of 1:1 to leave the home in event of an emergency if required.

To provide a safe, supported, and a happy low risk environment always whilst providing the support she requires.

The post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and a children’s safeguarding awareness course which will be funded through your employer.
