About me

I am a woman in my late 40s with limb girdle muscular dystrophy, married with professional part time job and many interests living in Cambourne CB23.

I use a powered wheelchair for mobility, transfers via hoist with two people and use a non-invasive ventilator the majority of the time.

I have extensive experience of living independently in CB24 and have put considerable thought into set up and routines.

I require assistance with all aspects of daily living, with housework and driving.

Hours and rate of Pay

  • 1 hour per day to work alongside my live-in worker to support me having a shower, the timing could be discussed, and I am keen to be flexible with the right person/s
  • Rate of pay £12 per hour
  • The post will include 5.6 weeks paid annual leave (pro-rata)
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required.

What you would be doing…

  •  Assist with personal care as instructed by me in a sensitive and dignified manner.
  • If required, assist in the preparation of snacks and meals.
  • It is important that you wear clothing and footwear appropriate to the tasks involved, e.g. flat shoes and clothes which permit freedom of movement.
  • If required, under my direction, supervise and/or assist in the administration of prescribed medication.
  • Undergo relevant training for professional development (and be paid the time taken for this).
  • Being alert and responsive to ventilator problems and assist swiftly with resolving them calmly (once trained)
  • Assisting with leaving the house including in an emergency

The person I would like…

  • This post is open only to people who identify as female due to the personal care element of the job and is a genuine occupational requirement. This is in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, Part 1, Schedule 9. 
  • You will be comfortable around disabled people with significant support requirements
  • Be responsive in a crisis
  • Be able to read text on backlit screen promptly
  • Be able to plug and unplug hoses and power leads without assistance, some of which are close to the floor
  • You should be a fluent English speaker (as I am not always able to speak up, face you or repeat what I have said)
  • Some knowledge of supporting people in their own homes and proven care skills
  • Previous experience of working 1-1 with disabled adults.  I am also advertising for a 2 hour a day post on PER/536433a/RV
