Job Description

Purpose: 

Work in collaboration with Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Process Technicians and TAS supply chain providing timely technical expertise in one or a combination of the following areas:

  • Product design
  • Process design (one or a combination of):
    • Assembly
    • Composites manufacturing
    • Plastic forming and moulding
    • Textile / Interiors trim manufacturing
    • Machining/Material removal manufacturing
    • Metal forming and fabrication
    • Metal casting & moulding
    • Material finishing including protective and/or cosmetic treatments
    • 3D printing/additive manufacturing
  • Equipment/Tool design
  • Material handling & packaging (Warehouse, logistics and point of use)
  • Production system design
  • Automated systems and control
  • Quality & continuous Improvement

Key Responsibilities:  

General and Task Management

  • Advising on material selection and/or suitable material manufacturing methods plus treatments for new product design
  • Troubleshooting material & process related issues
  • Advise, author and approve manufacturing materials and process specifications
  • Work with the Thompson manufacturing and supply chain teams together with external suppliers to create strategic partnerships and ensure appropriate material and process development
  • Assist on the formal qualification of suppliers for new manufacturing processes ensuring they comply to customer/national/international standards and offer technical support for any issues.
  • Materials and process simulation/analysis
  • Statistical Control Methods and Capability Analysis
  • Advanced tolerance analysis / GD&T
  • Design, prove, implement and maintain production systems to deliver product on time, to quality requirements and to cost
  • Support continuous improvement activities in quality, cycle times, process improvement, machine availability through lean techniques and value engineering to enhance the capability of existing processes and remove waste
  • Support product design for manufacture and assembly activities
  • Support product CAM/CAE activities
  • Cutting tool selection/design, work holding tool design, mould design
  • Support validation plans to ensure robust and comprehensive technical solutions
  • Develop and maintain project plans and budget profiles to ensure delivery of milestones to agreed cost targets and timescales
  • Identify and justify capital equipment investment
  • Analyse and improve material usage
  • Analyse downtime, identify trends and develop solutions
  • Ensure accuracy of manufacturing engineering procedures, documentation and systems data
  • Attend various meetings and action/communicate instructions
  • Produce written reports and make presentations
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems
  • Identify business improvement opportunities within the organisation
  • Conduct risk assessments of processes and tasks relative to the value stream or central function
