Manufacturing & Engineering Manager

Up to £50,000 per annum dependent on experience
40 - 50 / per week - Full-Time

Unity Doors Limited are a market leading UK manufacturer of bespoke composite and timber doors and door-sets. The Managing Director is recruiting for an experienced Manufacturing & Engineering Manager to join our team at our manufacturing site in Newent, Gloucestershire. This is a critical role for our Composite Door manufacturing plant and is an exciting opportunity for anyone who wants to join a progressive and successful business in a expanding market place. Suitable candidates for the role should be able to fulfil the brief below;

Reporting to:         Managing Director                                      

Reports:                Engineering Manager

                             3 x Production Supervisors

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Focus on process improvement and engineering for all aspects of manufacturing to maximize output and enable flexibility of workforce and machinery usage
  • Working closely with the Production Supervisors and Planning Manager to ensure the following key performance measures are achieved:
  • To achieve the output figures ensuring that the agreed product mix is adhered to and that the oldest orders are completed first
  • To achieve the output figures using the agreed direct labour pool in the most efficient manner and within agreed limits for overtime working.
  • To communicate clearly and regularly with the supervision in the plant and the employees to ensure that everyone is aware of the daily/weekly and monthly priorities in order to achieve the appropriate site budgets
  • To develop and implement plans and strategies to recover shortfalls in production and to work with the plant supervision to ensure these plans are implemented successfully and on time
  • To work closely with the Operations Manager and other members of the site management team to help achieve the overall objectives of the business
  • To work with the Production Supervisors to identify poor performance and take the necessary action to correct this including carrying out disciplinary procedures as necessary
  • To ensure that quality targets are met and corrective action is taken in a timely manner to correct faults and work closely with the Quality Manager on improvement projects
  • To ensure that everyone on site follows and adheres to Health and Safety requirements and that they lead by example how people should perform their roles safely
  • To develop and maintain high levels of housekeeping and organisation throughout the workplace and promote good housekeeping at every level
  • Accountable for all Maintenance & Engineering activities on site
  • Line management of Engineering Manager and Production Supervisors, providing mentoring and guidance on day to day activities
  • To work closely with the Senior management team on process improvement and engineering projects

 Skills, abilities and characteristics

  • Previous experience of managing a successful manufacturing unit which regularly achieves daily volume requirements and efficiency targets
  • Strong process improvement and engineering background and experience
  • Experienced line manager and able to deal with a variety of employment matters – recruitment, performance, conduct and absence
  • Manufacturing / Engineering background or qualification
  • Highly organised approach to work and able to react positively to demands from the business
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to influence individuals
  • Positive approach to work with a passion to succeed

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, life assurance, contributory pension, up to 23 days holiday per annum (plus bank holidays), free car parking, workwear and drinks.  Hours of work will vary but will but core hours will be based on a 40 hour working week - Monday to Friday - between the hours of 8am and 6pm, dependent on the needs of the business.
