Job Title: Carer (Female)
Responsible to: Directly accountable to and taking direction from the employer
Hours: 18 hours a week & additional hours to cover annual leave and sickness of carers
Work Pattern: Permanent hours: Monday & Tuesday - 1.30pm to 6pm and Friday 9am – 6pm
Temp Hours: Wednesday & Thursday – 1.30pm – 6pm (9 hours)
Hourly Rate of Pay: £12.25 per hour
Based at: Employer’s own home in Warndon Villages, Worcester and out in the local community.
To work one to one with an adult female who uses a wheelchair, who has severe lung conditions, multiple allergies, type 1 diabetes & rheumatoid arthritis, spinal injury & nerve damage & adrenal suppression. Who lives in her own house with downstairs wheelchair adapted accommodation; & also lives with her husband, grown up sons & a dog. To support her with day to day living & personal care. Drive her wheelchair adapted car to medical appointments & social outings. To accompany her out while she takes her dog for walks. She also enjoys cooking & baking, drawing & painting using her iPad, clothes shopping & wheelchair basketball so will need to help with these activities. The employer will be able to offer you CPD (Career personal development) online training courses – these include the basic care courses but also respiratory disease awareness, anaphylaxis & Adrenaline auto injectors, diabetes awareness, catheter care and hydrocortisone injection and adrenal crisis emergency treatment.
Main duties:
• Personal Care (washing and dressing)
• Help with transfers using mobile electric hoist for transfers & occasionally the Sara Stedy.
• Catheter care, changing night & day bags.
• Assisting with use of nebuliser & noninvasive ventilation machine & medication.
• Help with monitoring blood sugars using blood testing machine & hypo treatment.
• Treatment of severe allergic reactions using an adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen) & treatment of asthma attacks.
• Treatment of adrenal crisis due to adrenal insufficiency using hydrocortisone injection.
• Training will be given for administration of EpiPens, hydrocortisone injections, asthma treatments & using a nebuliser & machine. Training will also be given for using a blood sugar testing machine & insulin pump & how to treat a hypo.
• Her husband works from home so will mostly be in his home office, but available during medical emergencies to give assistance. Occasionally he will have to go into his work’s office, but not until training has been given.
• Help also needed with household tasks, cleaning, changing bed, washing & ironing. Making lunch & preparing food for dinner & washing up. Food shopping & collecting prescriptions & medication.
• Driving the lady in her WAV. The WAV has a ramp at the back & the lady remains seated in her wheelchair . The carer will need to operate the ramp & secure the wheelchair & the lady in the back of the car.
• Taking out to visit family & friends & clothes shopping. Help & support to attend medical appointments.
Personal Specification
- Have experience working with adults with reduced mobility/wheelchair users & medical conditions.
- Experience of asthma & allergies or diabetes would be preferred but full training will be given.
- Experience of using transfer equipment e.g. hoists or Sara Stedy will also be preferred but full training will be given.
- Needs to have full clean driving license & be over 24 years of age to be insured to drive the wheelchair accessible car.
- A nonsmoker & non vaper because the lady has lung conditions that are made worse by being in close contact with anyone who has been smoking &/or vaping.
- Perfume, scented deodorant, scented clothes washing products also cause severe respiratory problems. So must also be willing to wear unscented deodorants, unscented personal care products & make up while working with the lady.
- Must like dogs as there is a Giant Schnauzer called Eddie, he’s large but very friendly & well trained
- Also must like going for walks around the local area, & outings to countryside Centers & Malvern Hills.
