About the Job:

We are looking for a personal assistant for our 22-year-old son. He has autism with features of demand avoidance, a moderate learning disability and a physical health condition. He lives with us at home.

He is reasonably independent with his personal care, although can occasionally need help, particularly with zips and buttons. He has routines and rituals and can become anxious, particularly at times of transitions, and can become agitated when he feels hurried. He is quite a sociable and personable young man with a slapstick sense of humour. His special interests include music, radio stations, buses, trains, going to the cinema and fun fairs.  He has a helpful and detailed Positive Behaviour Support plan.

The job involves supporting our son to access the community or keeping him company at home.

Main Tasks:

  • Providing company and support inside and outside the home
  • Support with his chosen activities inside and outside the home and with making healthy and safe choices
  • Occasional help preparing food and drinks
  • Supporting him with his clothing when needed – he can need help with zips and buttons
  • Very occasionally providing assistance in the bathroom if needed

Person Specification:

  • Driver and car owner preferred as there is limited public transport locally. If you use your car whilst working, you will require business use on your car insurance
  • An understanding of autism and learning disability, or a willingness to learn
  • Punctual, reliable, flexible and patient
  • Non smoking whilst working
  • Honest and trustworthy
  • Establish a professional standard of care, which should be maintained at all times.
  • Be prepared to undertake any training that may be required to meet the needs of the role.
  • Ensure that due consideration is given to health and safety at all times.
  • Respect and safeguard the goods and property of the employer.
  • Respect privacy and uphold confidentiality at all times.

A Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) and two satisfactory references are conditional for the post. This is a free and confidential process.
